Aside from possibly treating breast cancer, Exemestane may be used to prevent the said disease from occurring or returning. Certain cancers grow faster with the help of the naturally occurring hormone, estrogen. By inhibiting the amount of estrogen that the body secretes, the growth of breast cancer is either slowed or reversed.
On the other hand, there are studies that Exemestane may also be a potent performance enhancer. It can possibly raise the follicle stimulating hormones and the luteinizing hormones in the body, this, in turn, can increase the ratio of male hormones over the female hormones among women. As a result, women may experience improved physical performance. The World Anti-Doping Agency has included Exemestane in its list of prohibited substances because of its performance-enhancing effects.
How Exemestane Works
Extensive studies made in 2011 showed how Exemestane reduces the invasion of breast cancer cells in post-menopausal women. Among men, it may help counteract gynecomastia or the enlargement of the breasts. Exemestane is a steroidal aromatase inactivator acting as a false substrate for aromatase enzymes. It works by binding itself to the said enzymes to prevent androgen from being converted into estrogen.
But like any other drug, there are known side effects of taking Exemestane. This is the reason why it must be used only under the supervision of a medical doctor. Exemestane has been known to cause hot flashes, unusual sweating, muscle pain, diarrhea, and nausea, among others. Statistics show that almost 10% of the people who use Exemestane as a medication suffer from one or more of these side effects. In some cases, it has also shown to have more serious side effects such as bone fractures, vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin, and persistent vomiting.
The use of Exemestane may cause problems with people who have high cholesterol, bone diseases, heart problems, and kidney issues. Those who have existing medical conditions should tell their full medical history to their attending physician prior to taking this drug. All drugs that include estrogen and estrogen blockers may interact negatively with this medicine.
