Clomiphene Benefits

Clomiphene may help in initiating ovulation. It is usually recommended for women who have irregular or absent menstrual cycles.  It can either initiate or augment ovulation, which means it can possibly stimulate the ovaries to produce more than just one mature egg, thus the cause of multiple births.

Aside from addressing infertility issues among women, Clomiphene may also be used by males to address the same issue. Research shows that it also possibly corrects certain menstrual abnormalities, persistent breast milk production, and the presence of fibrocystic breasts. But since this is a prescription drug, it is necessary to consult first with a qualified doctor before trying it.

There is also evidence that Clomiphene may possibly increase one’s testosterone levels and that could be the reason why the World Anti-Doping Agency has included this drug in their list of illegal doping agents used in sports. Bodybuilders also use it as an anti-estrogen for steroid cycle use as it is fairly effective at staving of Gynecomastia.

How Clomiphene Works

Clomiphene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator or SERM. It causes the release of the Gonadotropin-releasing hormone or GnRH by the hypothalamus and the gonadotropin from the anterior pituitary gland. But for best results, it has to be taken at the right time, preferably starting on the fifth day of a woman’s cycle. Frequent intercourse is also important to initiate a pregnancy.

The side effects associated with Clomiphene include stomach upset, breast tenderness, and dizziness. Its more serious side effects include vaginal bleeding, vision changes, and mood swings. It may also cause a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome or OHSS, which may lead to ovarian enlargement.

Not all women may use Clomiphene to address infertility, especially those who have a history of vaginal bleeding, ovarian cyst, liver disease, pituitary gland tumor, uterine fibroid, and thyroid or adrenal gland problems.

Pregnant and lactating women should also not take Clomiphene as the medication may pass into the breast milk and harm the infant. It may also slow down breast milk production. Additionally, there are certain vitamins, herbal products, and over-the-counter medicines that may change the effects of Clomiphene. Be sure to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medications along with this prescription drug.
